Our Team

The laboratory is staffed with nationally certified clinical technical specialists, medical laboratory technologists, medical laboratory technicians and histotechnicians. These positions are supported by lab technicians, lab assistants, phlebotomists, and clerical support personnel.

Clinical Technical Specialists (CTS)

The CTS provides technical leadership and expertise within the clinical laboratory departments. These medical technologists have specialized certifications in a specific laboratory discipline (ie. Chemistry, Blood Bank.) We have 21 persons in the lab with specialist certifications.

Medical Technologists (MT)

Most MTs are generalists and work in all areas of the laboratory performing diagnostic testing, interpretation of results and troubleshooting of problems. They have a bachelors degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or a bachelors degree in the Biological Sciences plus a one year clinical year in a accredited program. There are MT students training in our Blood Bank from the UMC/ Nebraska cooperative program.

Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT)

MLT’s perform laboratory testing in all areas of the laboratory. They perform assessment and interpretation of laboratory results. MLT is an associates degree program, which is available in Mexico at the ATC in affiliation with MACC. BHC Lab trains these MLT students.

Histotechnicians

Histotechnicians work in the Histology laboratory processing tissue and fluids, and preparing and staining slides for the Pathologist to make their diagnosis. Currently a one year of clinical training is required with an associates degree.

Lab Technicians

Lab technicians are lab assistants with greater than three years of experience that provide expertise and leadership in the specimen collection and processing area. They also assist the Pathologists and pathology assistant in the Frozen Room.

Lab Assistants

Lab assistants core duties are to collect and process patient samples. They also perform many clerical and support functions within the laboratory, as well as preparing patient samples for delivery to reference laboratories.

Phlebotomists

The phlebotomist is the entry level position, with the primary duties of collecting and processing patient samples.

Pathologists

Pathologists are medical doctors with minimally a four year residency in anatomic and clinical pathology. Many then complete fellowships in specific disciplines. BHC has four pathologists that are part of the Boyce and Bynum Pathology group.
