William Street Parking Garage

Completed

A bridge to the future of medicine

Posted May 19, 2009

Boone Hospital Center celebrated the opening of the William Street parking garage on Tuesday, May 12, in a dual ceremony that also celebrated the beginning of the new patient tower project. Dan Rothery, hospital president, points to the spot where a covered bridge will connect the garage and the new patient tower. Also pictured are members of the Boone Hospital Board of Trustees: Dr. Robert McDavid, Brian Neuner, Barbara Weaver, and Dr. Jerry Murrell.

What Goes Up...

Posted January 30, 2009

The crane that has towered above the William Street parking garage came down this week -- a sign that the project is getting closer to completion. Construction crews were also placing a few of the last pre-cast concrete panels along the outside of the structure.

Taking Shape

Posted January 9, 2009

The William Street Parking Garage is taking shape in 2009. Construction crews are now installing huge pre-cast concrete panels along the outside of the garage. The panels, which look like brick, can be as large as 60 feet long and 45,000 lbs.

Crews have also begun work on installing concrete stairs and the brick elements around sidewalks and driveways.

Elevator installment will begin in February, and the final completion date is in March.

First Pour Completed

Posted July 11, 2008

Construction crews made the first "small pour" of concrete for the ramp to the first raised level of the William Street parking garage on July 7. The next pour is planned for Saturday, July 12, and will "three times" larger than the July 7 pour, said Wayne Callahan, project superintendent.

A View From Above

Posted March 25, 2008

As high up as the crane is over the new William Street parking garage, the operator, J.R. Martin, says it isn’t the tallest one he’s been in. The crane that currently towers over the Boone Hospital campus is 114 foot tall, and the tallest he’s been in is 120 feet high. “The higher they are, the better,” Martin says, noting that he’s been all over the Midwest operating cranes.

Since the crane went up in early February, Martin, from Hartsurg, Mo., has been making the trek up the steps to the little cabin, always making safety checks along the way. “I don’t get in a real big hurry,” he says, about climbing up to the top. He has a safety schedule that he follows daily, weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly, and that includes even walking out along the arm. “I make sure all the bolts and pins are in place, that there are no cracks, and I check the limit switches. All these checks make sure that it is real safe,” Martin says.

The crane is here to service the other crafts that are building the parking garage, Martin says, and to move the process along. At the base of the arm, the crane can lift about 27,000 pounds, and toward the tip, it can lift about 7,000 pounds. The day before he was interviewed, the crane had been used to pour concrete. “It gets a little slow sometimes,” Martin says, speaking of his five years of experience operating cranes and 26 years of experience as an equipment operator.

Other than the view, one of the benefits of working on the Boone Hospital parking garage is that Martin may get to see his wife, Linda, a little more often. She works in the business office of the hospital. “It has been nice having him close by,” said Linda. “I was at the hospital and able to wave to him the other day.”

Construction Gets a Big Help

Posted February 12, 2008

Construction crews working on the William Street parking garage got some big equipment help this February.

A 114-foot tall tower crane was erected on February 7 to quickly move materials around the site and to pour concrete into the columns of the parking structure. The boom of the crane is 213-feet long and can reach every corner of the parking garage, as well as across William Street. The concrete footing that supports the crane is 20 feet wide by 20 feet wide and five feet thick.

The safety features on the crane are numerous. It has safety lights to alert aircraft, and the hospital has notified the Federal Aviation Administration of the large structure. When the crane is unoccupied, it has a safety feature called free flow, in which it moves with the wind so that little pressure is put on the tower frame. There are also automatic stops on the trolley to prevent any accidental collisions with the power lines near the site.

William Street Lane Closure

Posted January 18, 2008

During the construction of the William Street Parking Garage, the street will be reduced to two lanes, starting at the northern end of the construction site.

New traffic lanes have been painted and barricades will be placed on Monday, January 21 to ensure traffic safety.

It is recommended that those who turn left to travel west on Broadway find an alternate route, as traffic is expected to gridlock during peak traffic hours, such as shift changes.

A Good Foundation...

Posted December 28, 2007

How deep do you have to go to set a foundation for a multi-level parking garage?

That depends on the soil.

Despite freezing rain, ice and snowstorms, progress continues on the William Street parking garage. Crews have been using large drill rigs, like the ones pictured, to place 1,700 “viber stone columns” that will be used in the foundation process, said Wayne Callahan, project superintendent. The crew must go as deep as it takes to find material that meets the design standards. “On part of it, we’ve had to go pretty deep, like 20 feet,” said Callahan, “but sometimes we only have to go ten to twelve feet deep.”

As the project heads into the holiday season, Callahan says they will continue with foundation work, as well as the storm and sanitary lines.

Safety First

Posted December 28, 2007

Safety is priority number one on the job site of William Street parking garage. Contractors have placed floodlights around the project trailer so that employees will be safe as they walk to the west campus parking lots. The contractors will also be installing concrete “jersey barriers”, like the barriers used in highway construction, in order to prevent vehicles or pedestrians from traveling into the job site. There is also an effort to keep William Street clear of mud and gravel.

William Building Demolition

Posted October 18, 2007

The 11 South William Building will be demolished starting today. Once the building is cleared, work will commence on grading for the new garage and the relocation of underground utilities. Once complete, construction of piers and footings for the new garage will begin.

Waste Not...

Posted October 15, 2007

The old asphalt on the construction site of the William Street parking garage is being recycled and put to good use.

Crews have been using an asphalt milling machine to grind up the old pavement this week. As the old asphalt is chewed up, it’s put into dump trucks. From there, it will be hauled away and used for other projects, said Wayne Callahan, project superintendent for Reinhardt/Wilson. “They’ll take it and probably use it for a road base material,” said Callahan. “It may be used along the shoulder of the road or something like that.”

Groundbreaking Ceremony on October 9

Posted October 3, 2007

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on the future site of the William Street Parking Garage, beginning at 1 pm on Tuesday, October 9.

The media are invited to attend this historic event at Boone Hospital Center (Read the news release).

Boone's Largest Construction Project to Begin

Posted September 28, 2007

Dear Employees,

The largest expansion project in the history of Boone Hospital Center is about to begin.

On October 1st, we kick off the construction process for our new parking garage, located at the corner of William Street and Bass Avenue. It’s the first piece of the puzzle for the west face of the hospital, as the garage will ultimately connect to the new Patient Bed Tower with a bridge over William Street. It’s a tremendously exciting time for Boone Hospital Center.

In order to make way for progress, we must relocate approximately 200 employee parking spaces until the parking garage is complete in October 2008. As of Sunday, September 30, we are closing the parking lot located on William Street across from the hospital. I am pleased to tell you that we will not shuttle employees from a distant parking lot away from our campus. Instead, we are clearing space for two new temporary lots on Jack Estes Way, on the north side of the Broadway Medical Plazas. We will also be adding additional employee-only parking on the southeast corner of the campus, at the corner of Ann Street and Anthony Street.

This change will require some patience but will be well worth it when our modern, convenient, 900-space parking structure is complete. Please watch for specific pieces of communication regarding these parking changes in the next several days.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we begin the process of building for the future of our patients at Boone Hospital Center.

Cordially,

Dan Rothery, President
